The revenue forecast today is likely to start the debate in earnest about tax and spending proposals. Property tax relief is leading the list, and there is no doubt that it was a key issue for the 2006 election. However, raising property taxes on businesses to fund property tax relief for homeowners and additional LGA for local governments is not the answer. Businesses should not pay for property tax relief. Minnesota business property tax burdens are already three times that of homeowners.
Legislators need to look elsewhere to fund property tax relief -- the surplus is one option. I have attached a couple of documents that will be very helpful in your discussions with members and legislators. Please communicate with your legislators now! Urge them to oppose any effort to increase the statewide business property tax by any means.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns...or feedback from legislators.

Businesses should not be tapped for the relief of homeowners property tax relief. It is not the businesses that is demanding all the city services like trails, parks, extra meetings that drive up the cost of city services. Homeowners should pay for what THEY demand. Businesses not only bring in the tax base that keeps property taxes regular but are often then subjected to unresonable restriction on how they operate their business. NOT FAIR
